A Career in Ministry
By Melissa Rydners
In 2000, country artist Jessica Andrews had a hit song called “Who I Am,” and the chorus went like this:
I am Rosemary’s granddaughter
The spitting image of my father
And when the day is done
My momma’s still my biggest fan
Sometime I’m clueless and I’m clumsy
But I’ve got friends who love me
And they know just where I stand
It’s all a part of me
And that’s who I am.
This song is really a call story, words that are about who we are and who we are called to be in the world. More than anything, we are called to be just who we are, the way that God created us. No matter where life leads us, who tells us we are or aren’t worthy, God calls us just as we are.
There are some people that God calls specifically for the work of ordained ministry in the church. All of us are called to serve God through our faith, but some are called to be Pastor. Sometimes there are hints along the way that make us think, is God calling me to something bigger than where I am now? Is God calling me to preach and teach, to share the sacraments, to walk alongside people and communities in need? Too often, we ignore this call, thinking that God has someone else in mind or something else for us to do. Some people put this call off until it is too late, others answer knowing that even though the road may be rough, God is with us. If you have felt yourself pulled in a direction you can’t quite understand, it may be God’s call in your life.
This summer at Youth 2019 there is an exciting opportunity for those youth who think they might be feeling a call to Ordained ministry. There will be an in-depth workshop over the course of three days to explore your story, the moments where God is saying you are mine and I have called you, and how you might step into that call in the days, weeks, months and years ahead.
We all have friends who love us, we all know that everything we are is a part of who God created us to be, now for some, the question is: God where are you calling me to serve? If this sounds like a place of growth in your life make sure you look at this link for the workshop around your call:. See you in Kansas City at Youth 2019!
NOTE: The course is now full. Thank you to the 30-plus participants willing to be a part of testing this new denominational resource and exploring their calling and vocation. Thank you to the General Board of Higher Education & Ministry and the Young Clergy Initiative for partnering with us for this unique experience.
