Love for Ourselves
By Melissa Rynders
We live in a world that is constantly telling us that we are not enough, that we will never measure up. We see commercials that tell us we can be faster, prettier, healthier, happier, more popular if we just buy this thing or get into this routine. We live in a world where it is increasingly hard to love ourselves, and yet the Bible tells us over and over that we must love ourselves in order to be able to love others the way that God asks us to.
Mark 12:30-31 says, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this, You will love your neighbor as yourself. No other commandment is greater than this.” Love your neighbor as yourself. We often want to gloss over the end of this scripture, we can so easily think of all the ways that we can love our neighbor, serve them, take care of them, be kind to them, but we rarely think of how we can love ourselves. How do we serve ourselves, take care of ourselves, practice kindness to ourselves?
As you come to Youth 2019 in Kansas City, look at the ways in which you currently love yourself. And if you are struggling in this area know that you are not alone, and that together, as we worship and learn, gather in fellowship and faith, we will explore the ways in which we can daily work to love ourselves so that we can fully love our neighbor the way that God intend.
